When I was 5 I had to write one of those stupid what do you want to be when you grow up things. I wrote FARMR, only because I knew I wanted to work with horses, and the only thing I knew then was horses lived on farms, so I must want to be a farmer.
Truth is, I DO want to be a farmer. I did grow up with big gardens and home grown veggies and canned food. I met some people as an adult and suddenly it all clicked, I do want to farm. Horses are in my blood, yes, but having a farm and growing my own food is a way of life that is just natural to me. We don't have exactly what I really want yet, but it's coming, eventually.
In the mean time, I live vicariously through accounts like yours ❤️
I have tried to explain to friends why I subscribe to this newsletter and this post encompasses so much of that why. I am a 70 y/o cis, hetero white female retired physician. A lifelong yearning to live a life of authenticity has led me to many different enthusiasms and this post really put many of my thoughts together. I re-read the first three Emberverse books (the Dies the Fire trilogy) on the regular as comfort when the world seems unsurvivable. I live a small town urban life (condo with no yard) but am changing my personal environment day by day into something I am only now recognizing as my grail. Thank you Jenna. Your writing is a gift.
Errrr…. I am everything on this list except hiking/running. I do wander in the woods looking for mushrooms, but I don’t *hike*. I’m very annoying to hike with because I stop at moss, plants, flowers, fungi, trees, you name it.
I used to play WoW Religiously but my computer aged out, so I switched to ESO and then my computer also aged out of that so hoping to return to Skyrim when I upgrade
I was also 5 when I went horse crazy. Only competed in 4H shows. I hated English/dressage competition & leaned into Western pleasure. I always liked the bond of riding bareback. As for RenFairs, I dabbled in SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) & did a bit of costume design, learned a tiny bit of metal working with forges. What I liked best was the research to develop characters, not the Events and Faires full of too many people… When Doom came out, 30 some years ago, I once spent 8 hours straight, sitting in a retired NASA flight command chair wreaking havoc. I saw my own doom if I continued, so I quit. Reading and gardening are my passions, along with quilting (by hand and machine) and tying/weaving mohair saddle cinches and breast collars (circled back to horses, every time). I’ve been homesteading for about 30 years, 11 going on 12 here in NE Arizona, where horse manure builds amazing soil.
As someone who has a family who games, I'm so glad you made the connection! The first time my man had to dispatch a chicken, he hesitated. I told him he killed 100 video game characters that day. A chicken should be nothing. He's been a reliable farm hand ever since.
I’ve had (mostly) women working under my direct supervision in a hospital pharmacy mainly compounding using sterile technique. Perhaps upwards of 50 more or less that have come gone or stayed in my 35 years as a pharmacist. I came to predict my best technicians were the ones who were farmers, grew up on a farm or had horses.
They were problems solvers, they worked until the work was done. They looked at system solutions so they could be more efficient if we listened to them. They would do any job that needed to be done even if it was outside their job description. Didn’t put up with slackers and they were some of the nicest people I’ve ever met. A few of my thoughts why

I think curious foragers would fit right in!

That’s interesting! Why do you think that is?
Your voice and reading style are so nice to listen to! 😊
Thanks Joanna!!!
